Our most recent listens: The West Wing Weekly podcast, TV Avalanche, and ... what's that? A little thing called "Parenting Roundabout"?

Mother's Day is coming up this Sunday, and to mark the occasion, we've gathered a few of our favorite thoughts about what it means to be a mother. We tend to hit it right between inspiration and negativity. 00:31 School-Day Survivor: Who will make it out of the house alive, the kids or the parents? 05:08 Junior Financial Know-How: Teaching kids about money management and family finances is an ongoing project, with good, bad, and ugly lessons all around. 20:00 Friday Speed Round - Kids and Coffee: One way to save money is not having a bad Starbucks habit. Find out which one of us bans coffee for kids and teens, and which one fed it to her young child by accident. 26:26 Roundabout Roundup: We shout out Amazon Prime, Escape the Room board games, and Qantas Airways. 31:24 Interview of the Week: Terri chats with Amy Silverman, a journalist, mom, and author of My Heart Can't Even Believe It: A Story of Science, Love, and Down Syndrome. 42:32 Shameless Self-Promotion: Nicole's upcoming book; 12 Great Articles with Advice for Parents from Speech-Language Pathologists; 10 Things About Raising Girls Moms Wish They Knew Sooner. Sometimes we're feeling classical. Sometimes we're feeling pop. And sometimes certain songs just play themselves. We are the Rockets! The Mustangs! The Terriers! We are the Quakers! The Gauchos! The Lancers! The Little Lions! And we are a bunch of mascots Nicole can't remember because in Canada it's not a thing! Go, us! As seems to be the thing to do on Facebook these days, we talked about some concerts we've seen — and no lies on the list. (Mentioned: Terri's report on Lyle Lovett/Bonnie Raitt vs. Aaron Carter.) Your road map to this week's entertainment-themed episode: 00:30 Dancing with the Stars - "A Night at the Movies" had a tragicomic ending, as we said goodbye to Nancy (boo) and Nick (yay). Mentioned: Last season's Western paso doble, featuring James Hinchcliffe and Calvin Johnson. 12:37 The West Wing - Another "yay" for the way CJ gets back on her feet in this episode, "Ways and Means." 19:13 Challenge Round - Catherine challenged Terri to try the clever, long-running Disney XD cartoon "Phineas and Ferb," mostly because of its music, and Terri was indeed won over. For next week, she challenged Catherine to watch the "Something Ida This Way Comes" episode of Brothers and Sisters (available on the ABC website and app and on Hulu; here's the Extra Hot Great canon entry on it, too). Statistics say 10 percent of the population is left-handed, but for our podcast, it's more like 33.3%. Guess which one of us is the leftie. |
