[This week's speed rounds have been selected from our archives by Catherine. This one originally ran in October 2017.] To follow up our serious conversation on possible additions to valedictorian in honoring high-school seniors, we take a lighter look, prompted by former teacher Nicole who has been making her list.

[This week's speed rounds have been selected from our archives by Catherine. This one originally ran back in January.] From cheesesteaks to gelato, barbecue to ketchup chips, we shout out some location-specific specialties we love. [This week's speed rounds have been selected from our archives by Catherine. This one originally ran back in February.] Whether they’re questions we don’t want to answer in front of our kids or questions that throw us into an existential career crisis, we recall some things we wish we’d never been asked. Your road map to this week's entertainment-themed podcast: 00:28 Trophy Wife: We both say "Awww" to a brand-new twist on the sitcom wedding—and "oh my" to Megan Mullally as Kate's terrible mother—in "The Wedding," parts 1 and 2. 06:41 The West Wing: Order is restored, both on the show ("The Dogs of War," season 5) and the podcast, because Hrishi and Josh have returned from their tour. 14:58 Challenge Round: White Collar: Terri challenged Catherine to an episode of this show so we could get a glimpse of Procedural Natalie Morales (after a nice amount of Sitcom Natalie Morales on Trophy Wife). Like Suits before it, it's a fun one. We'll be bringing you a replay next week, but for June 26, we'll watch the next two episodes of Trophy Wife ("Couples Therapy" and "The Minutes"), The West Wing's "Jefferson Lives," and for the challenge round, Coco. [We're taking turns picking out some favorite episodes to share with you on weeks when vacations disrupt our usual chattiness. Catherine raided our archives for today's full episode (from January 15, 2018) and the speed rounds you'll hear on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Tomorrow, though, you can listen to a brand new Round 2.] 00:56 Homework Crisis: What assignment did Catherine's son leave to the last minute? Recording a podcast! 07:08 Just Trying to Help!: Step in, and you're judgey. Ignore, and you're heartless. What do you do when another parent is in a jam... in public? 24:15 Speed Round: Parenting Classes: After reading this list of 9 Parenting Classes We Wish Existed, we have some suggestions for the course catalog. 33:53 Roundabout Roundup: PosCast 1st Annual Holiday Song Blowout; My Shadow Son, by Gayle Brandeis at the Washington Post; and I, Tonya. 40:12 Shameless Self-Promotion: The Mauro 10-Point Comfort Scale for Award Show Dresses; 4 Different Ways to Evaluate Student Progress in the Inclusive Class; Teach Your Tot Tenacity. Thanks as always to Jon Morin for our fun in-and-out music. If you're reading this somewhere without hyperlinks, come to http://parentingroundabout.com for the full recap experience.
We're not unanimous on this important issue of the day, though Catherine can't imagine there'd even be any question. Terri's just trying to walk her dog around her nice suburban neighborhood. Why are people treating her like public enemy #1? We borrowed a question Catherine saw on an AV Club interview for today's Speed Round: "Would you rather be fluent in another language or a genius at one instrument?” We're split two to one on this; listen to see who would rather what. Your road map to this week's entertainment-themed episode: 00:56 Trophy Wife: We tried to tell Kate not to go into business with Jackie ("Foxed Lunch"), but she wouldn't listen. She does throw a great party, though ("Happy Bert Day"). 07:41 The West Wing: There are absolutely no parties in "7A WF 83429," in which we still don't find out what happened to Zoey Bartlet (but it doesn't look good). We do start to find out what the show looks like post-Aaron Sorkin. 16:57 Challenge Round: My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2: We're not sure why it took 14 years to come up with this sequel, but it's a nice palate cleanser after West Wing. For next week, Terri challenged Catherine to see Natalie Morales in a new light on White Collar (season 1, episode 2, "Threads"). We'll also continue with Trophy Wife's "The Wedding" (parts 1 and 2, episodes 16 and 17) and The West Wing's "The Dogs of War" (season 5, episode 2). 00:32 Live and In Person: Nicole and Catherine got to see each other IRL! Terri joined via Photoshop. 11:52 Love Is an Open Door: With six teens and young adults among us, there is a lot of disappearing into bedrooms. The challenge: Striking a balance between privacy and family time. 27:50 Speed Round: Leaving Home: Just as Nicole's son has come home after college, we have all done our share of returning to the nest. 37:17 Roundabout Roundup: Trtl travel pillow, TV Avalanche podcast, Last Man on Earth. 41:16 Shameless Self-Promotion: Terri on Patreon, NicoleEredics.com, Catherine (and the science class hedgehog) on Instagram. |
