This or that: sand and a sunburn or roller coasters and expensive fun? We're not all that enthusiastic about either one, TBH.

It's a delicate subject, but we do all have some bad diet story or other, from grapefruits to cabbage to partial vegan. There's one we give thumbs-up to, too. We're dreaming again on today's Speed Round, this time about an all-expenses-paid trip to whatever world monument we'd like to see. Special guest appearance by Nicole's dog Missy, who probably just wants to visit the backyard. Your road map to this week's entertainment-themed podcast: 00:31 One Day at a Time: Season 2 kicks off with some serious conversations about race, immigration, and the stress of juggling everything. Since we recorded, we have learned that the show has been renewed for season 3. Way to go, team! 7:27 I, Tonya: Catherine watched the Oscar-nominated film about Tonya Harding, starring Margot Robbie and our pal Allison Janney. It's a must-watch for even casual skating fans (just be ready for the f-bombs). 18:09 The Polka King: Continuing the biopic-of-bad-people theme, Catherine challenged Terri to watch this Netflix original starring Jack Black as a polka musician/Ponzi schemer. It was more enjoyable to Catherine since she's very familiar with its Northeastern Pennsylvania setting. For next week, Terri challenged Catherine to watch the pilot episodes of two under-rated (and poorly titled) sitcoms, Go On and Trophy Wife. We'll also continue with One Day at a Time ("To Zir, With Love" and "Roots") and The West Wing ("Privateers"). 00:36 Woot Canal: Like C.J. Cregg before her, Nicole had a "woot canaw." And it turns out we all have dental time bombs ticking away in our mouths. 05:27 Seeing Red: We discuss the anger styles of our kids, our spouses, and ourselves, and how they all mix together into a nice toxic soup. 19:08 Speed Round: Being Put on the Spot: Hey, other parents, please don't make us do your dirty work for you, okay? (It makes us mad.) 29:01 Roundabout Roundup: Blessings upon Ashley from Aramark Payment Services and Nicole's dentists, Estey and Carpenter; and enjoy these Hamildrop songs (and their associated videos, and this excellent, although NSFW, Twitter thread). 38:52 Shameless Self-Promotion: Terri's blog post about her kids' jobs; Nicole's upcoming (March 27!) webinar. Some days your searches are all business, sometimes you're falling down a reality TV rabbit hole, and sometimes, you're all about the podcast topics. Our splurges aren't exactly extravagant, but our teeth, hair, and Fitbits have been the beneficiaries of some special spending. But are we always happy with the results? Even if you're not a teenager living and dying by the amount of likes your posts receive, it's always nice to get some attention for the things we put on Facebook and Instagram and what-all. Today, we chat about some of our most satisfyingly appreciated posts. Your road map to this week's entertainment-themed podcast: 00:31 One Day at a Time: We close out season 1 with "Quinces," an episode we enjoyed very much. Overall, cheers to Justina Machado, Rita Moreno, and Stephen Tobolowsky for their excellence. On to season 2! 10:21 The West Wing: In "Red Haven's on Fire," Rob Lowe gets an unceremonious last episode. The accompanying West Wing Weekly podcast was especially rich in behind-the-scenes info this time. 17:28 Challenge Round: Ocean's Eleven: Terri challenged Catherine to watch the 2001 remake (of the 1960 film). It was Catherine's favorite kind of action movie: funny and free of blood. For next week, Catherine challenged Terri to watch a Netflix original movie starring Jack Black, The Polka King. We'll also watch the first two episodes of season 2 of One Day at a Time ("The Turn" and "Schooled"), and Catherine will give her review of I, Tonya. 00:32 Injury Report: Terri's husband is sidelined, which means many different challenges. 5:45 When Kids Face Rejection: We've found that helping our kids through painful setbacks is, well, painful. 25:45 Speed Round: Life-Changing Apps: We haven't found one that reverses rejection, but we sure do love messaging, mapping, and banking with our phones. 36:05 Roundabout Roundup: Brookes Publishing, the 20 Thousand Hertz podcast, and at-school college application assistance. 42:28 Shameless Self-Promotion: Nicole's inclusive education webinar; Common Mistakes to Avoid When Buying Your First Home; Requiem for a Toy Store. Thanks as always to Jon Morin for our fun in-and-out music. If you're reading this somewhere without hyperlinks, come to http://parentingroundabout.com for the full recap experience. |
