In praise of Catherine's hearty peonies, Nicole's too-fast-fading tulips, and any flower that's not making Terri sneeze. Spam phone calls are bad enough, but what about when salespeople come to your door—do you open it or hide until they go away? Or what if it's a kid selling cookies? Or a neighbor with a dead goose? We assess our degree of welcoming on today's Speed Round. Catherine's plans to attend a local writer's conference, and that inspired Terri to share her formative experience with the Santa Barbara Writer's Conference in the mid-’80s and Nicole to recall a particularly great teacher's conference full of math accessories. Your road map to this week's entertainment-themed episode: 00:36 One Day at a Time: Things get pretty dark for our heroine in "Hello, Penelope," but she has an unlikely savior—and makes a pretty great discovery in "Storage Wars." 8:30 Trophy Wife: Episodes 4 and 5 bring both sweetness and silliness as Kate settles into her wife/stepmom role. 14:50 Challenge Round: Nailed It: Catherine challenged Terri to watch this goofy Netflix baking show, but something about it missed the mark. For next week, we'll finish up season 2 of One Day at a Time with three episodes ("Homecoming," "Citizen Lydia," and "Not Yet"). We'll also watch episodes 6 and 7 of Trophy Wife ("Halloween" and "The Date"). Plus, we return to our West Wing watch with "Evidence of Things Not Seen" (season 4, episode 20). UPDATE! The new, short season of Dancing With the Stars starts on April 30, so we'll be covering that in next week's episode. To make room, we'll pause our Trophy Wife watch for a week and pick it back up again for our May 8 episode. 00:32 OTT Proms: Forget the school gym or a de-iced hockey rink. Nowadays, schools are putting on their parties at racetracks! 7:07 Sharing Is Caring: A viral post about not sharing got us talking about the tricky business of sharing vs. having boundaries. 23:05 Speed Round: Dancing Queens: Terri's husband will take her for a spin on the dance floor. Nicole's is more of a mosh-pit guy. And don't bother with Catherine's. 30:47 Roundabout Roundup: Schuyler's Australian adventure; website builder Weebly; and "Why America's Black Mothers and Babies Are in a Life-or-Death Crisis" and how you can help. 35:17 Shameless Self-Promotion: Marilee Talkington on Too Old for Cool (Terri's Tumblr); Nicole's new website; "Why Preschoolers Love Dinosaurs." Thanks as always to Jon Morin for our fun in-and-out music. If you're reading this somewhere without hyperlinks, come to http://parentingroundabout.com for the full recap experience. Hey, did you hear that Nicole wrote a book? And it's finally here! We celebrate her book-release day with a little talk about Inclusion in Action: Practical Strategies to Modify Your Curriculum and why you should run out right now and buy it. Seems like hardly a day goes by without a survey of some sort accosting us via e-mail or phone. Do we share our opinions? Pass the opportunity by? Only respond if it's some fun BuzzFeed thing? It'll only take you five minutes to find out. On a special speed round, friend of the podcast Katherine Lewis shares some of what she learned while researching her new book, The Good News About Bad Behavior. Visit Katherine at katherinerlewis.com. Your road map to this week's entertainment-themed podcast: 00:51 One Day at a Time: In the season 2 episode "Exclusive," we get a look at the dating difficulties of today (and Rita Moreno in a mini-catfight). The other episode we watched, "What Happened," lets us glimpse some of the family's origin story. 05:58 Trophy Wife: Episodes 2 and 3 of this one-season sitcom explore what happens in a busy blended family after the dating's done. 13:10 Challenge Round: He's Just Not That Into You: Terri's movie pick rolls the clock back less than 10 years, but into a whole different world of dating (MySpace! Landlines!). For next week, Catherine challenged Terri to a nice, soothing cooking show that has nothing to do with dating: Nailed It on Netflix. We'll watch the first two episodes. We'll also watch the next two episodes of One Day at a Time ("Hello, Penelope" and "Storage Wars") and Trophy Wife ("The Breakup" and "The Tryst"). |
