00:32 Delegation Fail: Terri tried to stay out of the doctor visiting, but the doctor had other ideas. 06:45 Teen Screen Queens: We are very live-and-let-live when it comes to kids and technology, but we wonder whether teens need to have better manners when it comes to their phones. (Mentioned: Our most recent Round 2, in which a mother-son argument is resolved via text.) 23:39 Friday Speed Round: Entertaining Teens: If they're not on their phones, what else are they gonna do? 30:38 Roundabout Roundup: Catherine likes Shutterfly's ShareSites app, Nicole praises LA's little known commuter rail system, and Terri has a fancy new Quip toothbrush. 38:58 Shameless Self-Promotion: Monthly Facebook roundup, How to Spot a Song Your Tot Will Love, The Inclusive Class on Pinterest. When we took on the question of favorite childhood cartoon, there was some confusion over comic strips vs. animation. So we answered both. Your road map to this week's entertainment-themed podcast: 01:15 Master of None: Season 2, episode 3 gave us a light-hearted, but still thoughtful, take on religion, and featured Aziz Ansari's real-life parents being charming as they play his character Dev's parents. (Mentioned: the Pop Culture Happy Hour discussion with Master of None's Lena Waithe.) 06:00 The West Wing: After two weeks off from Round 2, we are behind on re-watching this series along with the West Wing Weekly podcast. So this week we cover two episodes: "Bartlet for America" and its companion, "H.Con 172." We love how these two showcase the late, great John Spencer as Leo McGarry. Next week, we'll discuss episode 4 of Master of None and West Wing's "100,000 Airplanes" and "The Two Bartlets." On July 11, the Challenge Rounds will resume with the book The Royal We, so start reading (and nudge Terri to do the same). On the hot topic of licorice, we have divisive opinions on black licorice, and we're particularly unsure about the salted kind Catherine brought back from Iceland. 00:31 Travel Report: Catherine is back from Iceland, which she loved despite the prevalence of dried fish; and she recommends the tour company Pink Iceland to anyone who's thinking of visiting. 09:42 Terms and Conditions Apply: We welcome visitors to our homes ... sort of. We prefer that they not stay too long, require us to take them to Disneyland, or venture out of their assigned areas. 27:41 Friday Speed Round: Parenting Failures: Way back in Episode 97, we patted ourselves on the back for some strong parenting skillz. This time around, we're admitting to what's not going so well. 35:06 Interview of the Week: Terri chats with Robert Rummel-Hudson, author of Schuyler's Monster and blogger at Support for Special Needs (and, recently, the Friendship Circle blog too).. 50:56 Shameless Self-Promotion: Terri found 16 Special-Needs T-Shirts for Your Warm Weather Wardrobe; Nicole rounded up 10 Twitter Accounts to Follow for Inclusion Inspiration; Catherine has an essay in the July issue of Parents magazine. Thanks as always to Jon Morin for our fun in-and-out music. If you're reading this somewhere without hyperlinks, come to http://parentingroundabout.com for the full recap experience. 00:31 Ice, Ice, Iceland: Catherine and her son are headed to Iceland. Wish them luck with the jetlag, and the part where the kids have to sing in Icelandic. 04:15 It's a Very Special Episode: Since Nicole is down with the flu and Catherine's headed overseas, we're bringing you some of our greatest hits this week: a collection of our favorite travel-related speed rounds from the past two years. As a bonus, we'll hear from our friend Amanda Morin on some of these. Your road map: 05:20 Plan It, or Wing it?: Both have their pros and cons. (Featured speed rounds: "Do You Plan for Travel or Do You Wing It?" from 2/21/07 and "Where in the World Would You Like to Visit?" from 3/24/16.) 12:11 Modes of Transportation: Should we fly or drive, and how do we entertain ourselves on the road? (Featured Speed Rounds: "Plane Trips or Road Trips?" from 5/25/16, "How Do You Amuse Kids on Car Trips?" from 1/17/17, and "How Do You Amuse Yourself on Car Trips?" from 1/18/17.) 22:55 Hotel Life: We can be particular when it comes to our homes-away-from-home. (Featured Speed Rounds: "Our Family-Vacation Hotel Essentials" from 2/3/16, "How Nice Do You Need Accommodations to Be" from 6/28/16, and "What's Your Hotel-Room Arrival Routine?" from 3/21/16.) 33:17 Most Memorable Travel Disasters: Catherine goes way retro with hers, but each of these is disastrous in its own special way. (Featured episode from January 8, 2016.) Programming note: We will be off next Friday, June 16, and there will be no speed rounds for the next two weeks. Subscribe to this podcast and you won't miss our triumphant return on Friday, June 23. Thanks as always to Jon Morin for our fun in-and-out music. We count up all our household computers — the living, the dead, the well-used, the idle, the laptops, the desktops, the iPads, and the ones that come into our lives for only a school year. It's important to look after our health, sure, but some of the stuff we have to put up with before and during that exam make us kind of sick of it. |
