00:31 Our Handyman Friends: Catherine got some good news on a household project, which led to a discussion of how familiar we are with some of the folks who visit our homes. 07:04 The Limits of Parenting: This article on what parenting can (and can't) do really rang true for us. Plus it led to another in our series of "parenting books we could write," entitled Look for the String. 20:23 Friday Speed Round: Kids' Room Decor: Find out which of us describes her child's interior design as "Hoarders-themed," and which one had to censor her kid's posters with a Sharpie. 29:38 Interview of the Week: Meghan Corridan, pediatric occupational therapist, shares some of the 10 OT Tools for Under $10 that she regularly recommends to parents. 40:34 Shameless Self-Promotion: Too Old for Cool (Terri's Tumblr); 3 Easy Ways to Help Students Focus on Reading; 11 Foolproof Ways to Get Kids Talking at the Dinner Table. Thanks as always to Jon Morin for our fun in-and-out music. If you're reading this somewhere without hyperlinks, come to http://parentingroundabout.com for the full recap experience.

Catherine belongs to a group for displaced magazine editors, and that got us thinking what other niches of professional and personal interest we'd like to be able to crawl into. It seems like a good idea at the time, but are we really ready to roll in a humongous moving house? Nicole shares her dream. Your road map to this week's entertainment-themed podcast: 00:41 Dancing with the Stars: We cover four hours of dancing in about 11 minutes, plus award our own prizes for Entertainment and Enthusiasm to two of the stars. 11:36 The West Wing: The drama quotient is high on "Posse Comitatus," the season three finale. If you're familiar with the ep, you'll understand why (and when) Catherine screamed while watching on the treadmill. 23:35 Challenge Round: NCIS: Since Mark Harmon's character on West Wing is no more (sob), Terri challenged Catherine to watch him as Leroy Jethro Gibbs on the long-lived series NCIS (season 6, episode 4, "Heartland"). Catherine investigated and found it worth the watch. For next time, she challenged Terri to take in John Lithgow's Emmy-winning performance as Winston Churchill on The Crown (season 1, episode 9, "Assassins"). For next week, we'll watch that and Dancing with the Stars, plus listen to The West Wing Weekly's "Big Block of Cheese" podcast ep (not the season 4 premiere just yet). See you Tuesday, October 3. Since we're past our stage of life for shows like The Bachelor and Big Brother, we broadened our choice to Food Network and HGTV shows, and allowed ourselves to imagine we're foreign travelers and stars. Terri's upcoming trip to the Gluten Free and Allergy Friendly Expo got us thinking about all the different allergy-accommodating foods available today and whether we really have to have that restriction to enjoy them. 00:31 Parental Independence: Catherine's son is walking to and from school by himself, and it's a beautiful thing. 04:45 Kids (Parenting Kids) Today: We mostly reserve judgment over the ways millennial parents do things their own way. Well, we try. (Here's the far-judgier-than-we slideshow that prompted this chat, and the article about delayed adulting we also mention.) 27:00 Friday Speed Round: Terrible Parenting Advice: Parents (and therapists) from past generations have passed on some truly crummy wisdom. We've totally gotten over resenting them for it, sure! 35:20 Roundabout Roundup: Terri will soon be snacking at the Gluten Free & Allergen Friendly Expo (visit our Facebook page for more info on tickets); Catherine's listening to Rough Translation; and Nicole's watching Ozark. 40:05 Shameless Self-Promotion: Nicole's book is coming soon; we shamelessly ask for a review of this podcast; and we suggest you listen to our Round 2 podcast episodes, too. Thanks as always to Jon Morin for our fun in-and-out music. If you're reading this somewhere without hyperlinks, come to http://parentingroundabout.com for the full recap experience. Terri already had her fangirl experience (listen to the podcast ep and check out the book mentioned), but Rob Lowe, Jared Leto (conditionally), and Lin-Manuel Miranda are still on our list. Snacks for the road! Two of us advocate for every kind of junk food, diets be darned, while one will allow for apples. We're leaving her at the side of the road. Your road map to this week's entertainment-themed podcast: 00:34 Dancing with the Stars: The season kicked off this week with an appealing and promising cast of characters. Fingers crossed that it will continue that way! (Mentioned: the chat on Annie Barrett's blog) 09:20 The Emmy Awards: We'll take more Sterling K. Brown, please, and fewer sketches that cut into his speaking time. (Mentioned: Catherine and Nicole discussing Big Little Lies on a previous Round 2.) 21:15 The West Wing: In this one ("We Killed Yamamoto"), we'll take more Simon/C.J. and less Josh/Amy. 27:49 Challenge Round: Grand Designs: Catherine challenged Terri to watch this British take on the home makeover, and she enjoyed it very much (but has some furnishing questions, if anyone's listening). For next time, Terri challenged Catherine to an episode of NCIS (season 6, episode 4, "Heartland") so we can get our Mark Harmon fix. That's because we won't be watching a new episode of The West Wing; we'll stick with the West Wing Weekly podcast special episode instead. Plus, Dancing with the Stars is on both Monday and Tuesday next week, so we'll come back to you on Wednesday with Round 2 coverage. UPDATE: Silly us! Turns out the West Wing Weekly special episode is the episode for the last episode of season 3, "Posse Comitatus." So we'll be watching that episode too, and getting a double dose of Mark Harmon. Which is just fine with us. |
