Your road map to this week's entertainment-themed podcast: 00:34 So You Think You Can Dance: We tried to skip the audition process. Turns out we failed, because the Academy is just "gotcha! more auditions!" 12:07 The West Wing: On "Disaster Relief," Donna and Margaret show they're as effective as FEMA (probably more so). 22:22 Challenge Round: Royal Pains: Terri challenged Catherine to finish her USA Network procedural education by watching the pilot of this McGyver-ish medical show set in the Hamptons. It's as fun as a day at the beach. For next week, Catherine challenged Terri to watch the Oscar-bait movie Lady Bird. We'll also watch West Wing's "Separation of Powers" and the next episode of So You Think You Can Dance.

00:50 Plane Plague: With one podcaster down for the count, we bring you an assortment of our past conversations on sickness and health. Your road map: 01:07 When Parents Get Sick: When Mom or Dad is under the weather, does everything stop? Does life go on? Does it matter which parent we're talking about? We talked about it all on this speed round from February 2017. 05:18 Do You Ever Take a Sick Day? Sometimes, we wish for the ability to just put school or work on hold for 24 hours and take good care of ourselves. But sick days are few and far between for freelancers, alas, and even sparser for parents, as we discussed in this November 2016 speed round. 09:21 Not the Doctor!: It's important to look after our health, sure, but some of the stuff we have to put up with before and during that exam make us kind of sick of it, as we complained in this speed round from June 2017. 13:26 When Kids Are the Patients: We sometimes don't have the patience, and have drastically misinterpreted our kids' actual significant health emergencies, from appendicitis to ulcers to a broken wrist. We confessed all in this segment from an April 2016 episode. Thanks as always to Jon Morin for our fun in-and-out music. If you're reading this somewhere without hyperlinks, come to http://parentingroundabout.com for the full recap experience. [This week's speed rounds have been selected from our archives by Nicole. No surprise that she picked this one from April 2018.] Hey, did you hear that Nicole wrote a book? And it's finally here! We celebrate her book-release day with a little talk about Inclusion in Action: Practical Strategies to Modify Your Curriculum and why you should run out right now and buy it. [This week's speed rounds have been selected from our archives by Nicole. This one originally ran in April 2017.] On today's Speed Round, we talked weird foods we're not afraid to say we like. Hear us justify our appreciation of rice cakes with margarine, Brussels sprouts, and Vegemite. [This week's speed rounds have been selected from our archives by Nicole. This one originally ran in September 2016.] Catherine's son is still angling for an alpaca, and while none of us has ever had one of those in our backyard, we have occasionally accumulated less common pets than the dogs that regularly chime in on our episodes. What's the weirdest pet you've had? Tell us about it in the comments here or on our Facebook page. Your road map to this week's entertainment-themed podcast: 00:36 So You Think You Can Dance: After giving up on this show two years ago (during an ill-fated "next generation" season featuring tweens), we are trying again. So far, so good! 11:17 The West Wing: On "Constituency of One," everyone in the West Wing is having a terrible, horrible, no-good, very bad day. 21:03 Challenge Round: The Martian: Meanwhile, on Mars, astronaut Mark Watney is having a much worse series of days, but he has a better attitude about it. Mentioned: Articles about the movie's use of the F-word, and the school-friendly version of the book from which the film was adapted. For next week, Terri challenged Catherine to watch the pilot of Royal Pains (thus completing her USA Network bingo card). We'll also watch West Wing's "Disaster Relief" and the next episode of So You Think You Can Dance. [We're taking turns picking out some favorite episodes to share with you on weeks when vacations disrupt our usual chattiness. Nicole raided our archives for today's full episode (from January 29, 2018) and the speed rounds you'll hear on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Tomorrow, though, you can listen to a brand-new Round 2.] 00:46 Travels with Catherine: We know you'll be jealous when you hear where Catherine stopped on her 15-hour trip from Wisconsin to Kansas. 06:58 The Buzz About Bouncing Back: "Resilience" is a big buzzword in parenting and education, but what does it even mean? And is there really a way to help every child develop it? 24:10 Speed Round: Pack Your Bags, Kids! We discuss whether our kids can be trusted to pack their own suitcases, and the value of a packing list that comes from an authority figure other than Mom. 33:20 Roundabout Roundup: Dog Shaming (and WeRateDogs, on Twitter and in book form); SocialOomph; and the GroupMe app. 39:32 Shameless Self-Promotion: This very show on PlayerFM's Best Parenting Podcasts; Nicole's book, with a review from Terri; the podcast on Instagram. Thanks as always to Jon Morin for our fun in-and-out music. If you're reading this somewhere without hyperlinks, come to http://parentingroundabout.com for the full recap experience. Nicole brought to our attention an article about American Dream Miami, soon to be the biggest mall in America, but not exactly our dream of the perfect mall. We'd skip the amusement park rides and ice-climbing wall and focus on things like roaming nail technicians, golf carts, and the ability to shop in peace. (Mentioned: Mall of America, West Edmonton Mall, and American Dream Meadowlands, coming soon to Terri's neighborhood, yikes.) There are plenty of foods we have limited interest in, or enjoy in small amounts, or enjoy not at all. But is there anything we can imagine indulging in again and again and forever? Hear what salty, cheese-y, and sweet stuff makes our list. Sure, it's healthy to let things go, and to appreciate that the only people we can change are ourselves. But can we always manage that? Do we still try to get even with people? Or just yell at them in our heads? It's complicated. |
